The National History Museum of Mauritius,
Mahébourg
A visit to the National History Museum of Mauritius is like travelling back the memory lane of Mauritius’ colonial history. The Museum housed in the Gheude Castle, a magnificent French colonial mansion built around 1770, is located at Mahébourg on the bank of La Chaux River amidst a luxuriant park of pine trees. It is here that Commanders Nesbit Josiah Willoughby and Guy Victor Duperré, two adversaries who were seriously wounded in the Naval Battle of Grand Port, were nursed side by side by their respective doctors.

The Dutch section of the museum was inaugurated by His Highness Prince Maurits of Orange-Nassau on 20 September 1998. It was a ceremony to mark the 400th anniversary of the first Dutch landing in Mauritius.
Mahebourg is among the most prominent destination in the tourism map of Mauritius. It is the gem of the Indian Ocean, located on the southeast coast of Mauritius.
It is an exceptional blend of various cultures and cuisines, including European, Creole, Chinese and Indian. Mahebourg is a tropical splendor for vacationers, who can relax and enjoy the warm and comfortable atmosphere of the place, or get involved in a wide range of activities that the place offers.

History of Mahebourg - Town of Mahebourg

The town of Mahebourg has a glorious history. It was the first place in Mauritius visited by the colonizers several centuries back. Mahebourg was once an important harbor buzzing with activity. The town was named after the eminent French Governor Mahe La Bourdonnais but was pronounced as 'May Burg:

Mahebourg Monday Market

Don't miss the foire de Mahébourg in central Mahébourg near the waterfront. The initial focus was silks and other textiles, but these days you'll find a roaring produce section, rows of tacky bric-a-brac and steaming food stalls. It's the perfect place to try some of the local snacks – gâteaux piments, dholl puris, samoussa and chilli bites – usually dispensed from boxes on the backs of motorcycles. It doesn't take long to navigate the snaking rows of vendors, but it's well worth visiting if you found the market in Port Louis far too touristy. The market is open every day but it doubles in size on Mondays.Specially on Monday we can visit the big market.

Blue Bay Beaches
Mahebourg is a larger town in Mauritius and Blue Bay Beach is close. Because of this, Blue Bay Beach can get kind of crowded on weekends. But during the week, you may have this long beauty all to yourself – well, almost.
Blue Bay is named for the crystal-clear ice blue water. This is one of those beaches in the world where it is simply hard to get a bad picture. The contrasts are simply amazing.

To get the best shots, make sure your camera is set to “beach” or “sun” or “outdoors”. Best times are mid morning and late afternoon. You can sneak in a great shot at other times, as well. Just make sure you don’t position yourself where you’ll get too much glare.Next, compose your shot with plenty of contrast. For beach shots here, it’s easy. Get about half sand and half sky. And make sure you get some great sky – with few clouds. The blues are amazing here (and at other beaches as well). Blue Bay Beach is located on the southeast side of the main island and is very easily accessible. When in Mahebourg, just ask the directions to Blue Bay… and take the camera.

Pointe du Diable
Devils Point, 8km north of Vieux Grand Port, was once the site of a French coastal battery. The cannons remain. Vieux Grand Port
About 7km north of Mahebourg, Vieux Grand Port has great historical significance for Mauritius. The Dutch made Vieux Grand Port their base and called it Fort Fredrick Henric. About 4km from Mahebourg
The French Period
After the departure of the Dutch 1n 1710, Guillaume Dufresne D'Arsel, while on the route to India, landed in Mauritius in September 1715 and claimed the island for France. He named Mauritius 'Ile de France .
