La Vallee de Ferney

Nested within Bambou Mountains, La Vallee de Ferney is a nature reserve of 200 hectares which tends to preserve the native forest of Mauritius. With its unique biodiversity, the forest is a shelter for more than 100 plant species, and numerous animals, including vertebrate and invertebrate species. Mauritius being the 3rd country in the world to have the highest number of extinct species, La Vallee de Ferney is a natural heritage that needs to be protected and presered for the future generation. La Vallée de Ferney sets out to become a reference for a raising community awareness and providing out-of-classroom educational experience with regards to biodiversity conservation and environmental protection. La Vallée de Ferney Conservation Trust represents a public-private partnership between the Government of Mauritius and CIEL Group that came into existence in 2006. The Trust is dedicated to the restoration and protection of the natural habitats contained within the reserve.

To encourage people of the local and international community to access Ferney Forest by increasing awareness of the forest and its unique character.

  • The Trust employs a qualified Conservation Coordinator to gear all on-site and off-site activities and programmes relating to the protection of the forest.

Vallee de Ferney is also set to become a reference for raising community awareness and providing out-of-classroom educational experience with regards to biodiversity conservation and environmental protection.

Management of the eco-touristic site

La Vallee de Ferney Co. Ltd and Ciel et Nature Ltd are companies sub-contracted by the Vallée de Ferney Conservation Trust to ensure impartial and effective day to day management and running of the site. Both companies collaborate to the management and establishment of quality within its food and beverage service at the Ferney Lodge. The managing companies equally ensure visitors receive a unique and warm welcome within well-kept facilities and by guides who are constantly trained and evaluated.

Visit the Valley

A visit to Vallee de Ferney throws people of all ages into a luxuriant and breath-catching natural scenery, 7 days a week. Nature captures the attention of visitors right from the picnic garden on the grounds near the Ferney Sugar Estate mill where visitors can walk up to a small coffee plantation as well an individual of the endemic Latania loddigesii (Latanier bleu or Latanier de L’ile Ronde). The Vallee de Ferney port of call is the Visitors’ Centre where trained guides provide detailed information on the forest reserve, the trek and pedagogical information on the biodiversity being preserved in Ferney. Visitors also have the opportunity to buy souvenirs from the shop within the Visitors’ Centre before or after their visit.

The Track
A visit to Ferney forest reserve entails a trek on-foot of 3 km long which can last up to 1hr30. Visitors are encouraged to book for guided treks at either 10:00 am or 02:00 pm. Staff are equally present all along the track for non-guided visits for which the Vallee de Ferney transport ensures transfers of visitors from the Visitors’ Centre to the Valley every 25-30 minutes. Usual safety measures pertain to the use of adapted walking shoes, use of mosquito repellent, drinking plenty of water during the trek, keeping mobiles and pagers off when in the forest, no littering and no damaging to the animals and plants. Plant adopters will also have the opportunity of seeing their adopted trees in their natural setting.
