Le Morne Cultural Landscape: UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE

Besides being a breathtaking natural spectacle, the mountain of Le Morne holds great importance in the history and memory of Mauritius. It was here, in the south-west of the island, that runaway slaves used to hide during the 18th and early 19th Centuries – protected by the mountain’s isolated, wooded and almost inaccessible cliffs.

The oral traditions associated with these runaways have made Le Morne a symbol of the slaves’ fight for freedom, their suffering and their sacrifice. Over the years, the location has become a symbol of resistance to slavery and a focal point for those wanting to commemorate its abolition – especially the descendants of slave communities who still live on the island.

The Final Nomination Dossier and the Draft Management of Le Morne was inscribed on to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2008.

Baie Du Cap

Baie-du-Cap is a small village located along the south coastal region of Mauritius. The southern coast of Mauritius is known for its natural beauty because of which you will be tempted to go for a drive around the coast from Mahebourg down to Baie du Cap. This region, stretching itself from Mahebourg to Le Morne, from one point to the other, is exceptional. From small coastal villages to the township, the coast is wild and the open sea is never sea off. Approximate distance in miles from Baie Du Cap Mauritius to Mahebourg Mauritius is 22 miles. After the sandy beaches of Blue Bay, Le Chaland and La Cambuse, the coast becomes more and more wild and rocky and the climate more and more breezy. Rain is very frequent in this part of the island and so are the cascading waters that travel down the picturesque landscape, forming canyons by deeply cutting into the soft soil where hiking, canoeing and other nature activities

La Prairie
La Prairie is a vast stretch of grass and beach land, located between Le Morne Village and Baie du Cap in the southwest of Mauritius.

With its picturesque backdrop of Le Morne Brabant in the distance, the area is a popular picnic spot for local families from the neighbouring villages, such as St Martin and Bel Ombre, but also from the larger nearby towns of Chemin Grenier and Souillac.

With a few exceptions, most of La Prairie beach is protected by the southwest coral reef of Le Morne, and the majority of La Prairie enjoys shallow, calm waters year round, perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

The west parts of La Prairie are especially good for families with children due to the shallow waters, quiet bay like areas and protection by the coral reef.
