National History Museum Mahebourg
The National History Museum, Mahébourg: This old colonial house, dating from the 18th Century, depicts the main episodes in Mauritius’ vibrant history. Old maps, delicate china, corsairs’ swords, ancient powder guns and remnants of shipwrecks are all on display here.
Town of Mahebourg
The old colonial capital of Mauritius, Mahébourg is in the South-West of the island, on the shores of the country’s biggest lagoon. It is the town that is closest to the island’s only airport. Unusual in its mix of colonial and Creole architecture, Mahébourg is a sleepy coastal village that is only really animated on market day or for festivals. The biggest town in the Grand Port district, Mahébourg has a population of more than 15,700 (figures from the 2000 census)
