Ever thought of a life without having any memorable photos, each taking you on a unique journey in time?

The camera, the device that is now so crucial to our lives that it is even on our mobile phones, has such a drastic effect on our lives and has been playing a key part in the preservation of our history.

Our lives would never have been the same if we couldn’t capture all the beautiful moments and show them off with the photographic display we all collect through the ages.

The photographic museum offers us the privilege of discovering the being of this humble object, that is, the camera, together with an enormous display of the first-ever photographs taken with the ancestor of the camera.

Aapravasi Ghat is a dilapidated complex of buildings and was the first immigration office in the world. Located in Port Louis, Aapravasi Ghat was opened in 1849 by the British government and was the first place for the reception of immigrants from India.

The complex occupies an area of approximately 1640 m2. Between 1849 and 1920, 500,000 Indian workers came through the immigration office. In 2006, the entire complex was registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
