Trou Aux Cerfs Crater
This massive crater in the heart of Mauritius measures more than 980 feet (300 meters) in diameter and some 260 feet (80 meters) deep. Known for its humid climate and expansive 360-degree views, Trou aux Cerfs Crater is a favorite spot among travelers seeking out natural beauty and quiet tranquility.
Formed approximately 700,000 years ago, Trou aux Cerfs is believed to have been created by volcanic activity that shaped much of Mauritius. Today, the crater measures about 350 meters in diameter and descends nearly 100 meters deep. Although it is dormant, scientists continue to monitor the site due to the island’s volcanic history. For visitors, however, the crater is completely safe and easily accessible.
While this dormant volcano hasn’t erupted in lifetimes, experts say it’s primed to blow any time in the next thousand years—a fact that lends a bit of edge to an otherwise peaceful excursion.
Travelers can wander the scenic paths surrounding Trou aux Crefs Crater and take epic views of the incredible island countryside.
One of the main attractions of Trou aux Cerfs is the panoramic view from its rim. On clear days, you can enjoy sweeping views of Curepipe, the central plateau, and even the distant mountain ranges of Mauritius. The well-maintained circular path around the crater is ideal for leisurely walks, jogging, or simply soaking in the tranquil atmosphere. Benches placed along the route allow visitors to relax and admire the scenery.
Some believe the Grand Bassin, a natural lake at the top of another nearby volcano, is an extension of the Ganges River, so travelers can sometimes find Hindus from throughout Mauritius worshiping at its sacred waters.
Trou aux Cerfs Crater is also popular among nature lovers and photographers. The contrast between the deep crater, vibrant vegetation, and cool climate creates a unique visual experience. As it is free to enter and centrally located, it is often included in city tours and South Island excursions.
Whether you are interested in geology, nature, or simply looking for a serene spot with beautiful views, Trou aux Cerfs Crater is a must-visit destination that perfectly reflects the natural beauty of Mauritius.
Practical Info:
The crater is located in Curepipe, in central Mauritius. While it is accessible via a steep path, locals agree that the slippery channel that leads to the crater is too dangerous to descend.
Then you can do some shopping in Floreal and Curepipe.
